This is the 472nd installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.
Lucha Liberties
In the mid 1990’s, WCW Monday Nitro was a red hot show, partly due to the influx of sensational lucha libre talent from Mexico. While the luchadors fast paced, high risk maneuvers wowed many WCW fans across the country, not all within the company were impressed. In fact, some of the WCW roster were jealous of the attention the luchadors were receiving and some decided to take action.
According to Konnan, who worked as a liaison between the luchadors and WCW…he would hear complaints from the Mexican talent that wrestlers would “take liberties” on them inside the ring. Basically, some wrestlers would work the luchadors extra stiff and snug to send a message. Konnan said not only did he hear and witness such actions, he also experienced it first hand. Konnan accused the late Chris Adams as one of the biggest infractors.
Konnan also mentioned the Armstrong brothers, but couldn’t remember which ones exactly who also punished the luchadors physically in the ring. As for Chris Adams, Konnan recalled wrestling him one night and experiencing Adams hitting him with stiff moves. Konnan decided to retaliate in their match, which led to a verbal confrontation between the two backstage. Konnan made it known to Adams that he knew what he was up to and that if it continued the two of them (Adams and Konnan) were going to have a problem.
Gun of A Son
Karl Afflis, the son of the legendary Dick ‘the Bruiser’ Afflis, was arrested in August of 1976 on charges of assault and battery with intent to kill. It all stemmed from the then 19 year old Afflis shooting an 18 year old female in the neck with a .25 caliber handgun. Afflis contended that he was just showing the brand new gun to the female victim, when it accidentally discharged. The female victim did survive her wound.
Afflis agreed to plead guilty to a firearms charge in a plea agreement and was sentenced to one year probation. The young Karl Afflis briefly had a wrestling career of his own, where he competed under the moniker of ‘Leroy Redbone.’ He would amass quite a long criminal rap sheet over his life as previously outlined here.
Webb of Trouble
Webb Pierce was arguably the most successful country singer of the 1950’s, charting more number one hits than any other country artist during the decade. Pierce was good friends with female wrestler Cora Combs, who was a former country singer and songwriter herself having been in the band the Trail Riders before pursuing a wrestling career. Combs was rumored to have ghost written several of Webb Pierce’s songs throughout the years.
In 1953, in Nashville, Tennessee…a drunken Webb went searching for his friend Combs backstage at a wrestling show. Webb ended up at the women’s dressing room and proceeded to try and enter the room with several ladies trying to hold the door closed. The police were called and arrested Webb Pierce on charges of public drunkenness and resisting arrest. Cora Combs was later quoted as saying she felt responsible for the incident and bailed Webb out of jail later that night.
Big Things in Small Packages
Stan Frazier, who wrestled in the Memphis territory as ‘Plowboy’ Frazier and also known as ‘Uncle Elmer’ in the WWF…stood 6 ft 10 in tall and weighed well over 400 pounds. According to some who worked with Frazier in Memphis…the big man had a very unique sexual fetish. Frazier allegedly enjoyed having sex with female midget wrestlers who were usually on the same card as Frazier. He often set out to hook up with the small lady wrestlers whenever they were booked on shows.
Jim Cornette revealed that he would not only have sex with the little grapplers, but also enjoyed photographing the sessions and keep them as mementos.
