This Week in Wrestling: Week 50 of 2025

After over a year of build up, the last time is now. We have finally reached the end of John Cena’s farewell tour in WWE. Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington DC is the place where we will see John Cena put on the baseball cap and jorts one final time, before he calls it a career. His final opponent will be Gunther and while I am in the group of fans feeling Gunther did not need the “rub” to be in the ring for Cena’s last match, I have no doubt that Gunther will get a good match out of him.
Personally, I felt that it should be a young wrestler, not yet established to get the nod. Much like when Cena debuted over 23 years ago against Kurt Angle. Alas this is what we got. On a much brighter side, NXT stars will be featured prominently on the undercard, which definitely makes up for the snub for Cena’s last match. More eyeballs will get the opportunity to see up and coming talent like Sol Ruca, J’Von Evans and Oba Femi. Considering that a lot of eyeballs will be watching this event, that is a very good thing for NXT and WWE.

Now a lot of fans have been critical of Triple H’s booking of this farewell tour including myself. There was the nonsensical heel turn that ended up falling flat, him getting squashed by Brock Lesnar and a few other smaller things that really did not resonate with me. Looking back at the whole body of work for this retirement tour, I think I understand what Triple H was thinking. I believe he wanted to tie up a few loose ends in Cena’s career. Making him win a 17th world title breaking his supposed tie with Ric Flair for most world title wins. Of course technically that is not true. There was also Cena turning heel one last time, something fans were clamoring for for years during his career on top. Cena winning the Intercontinental title, the one title that had eluded him in his WWE career. So in that regard, I see what Triple H wanted to do booking this tour. I just think it could have been done better, but I am not a booker so I have no room to criticize. I am just a fan with an opinion.

That being said, whether you loved John Cena or hated the John Cena character, there is no question what he meant to the company for the past two decades. He carried the company during some dark years and made the most out of his push behind the Vince McMahon machine. The work he did outside of the ring with all of his Make a Wish appearances alone garnered much respect. Cena always seemed to respect the history of the wrestling business and did a lot to contribute to it. He wasn’t a great wrestler, but definitely a great promo and worked hard to put on a show. I think fans will miss seeing him even if they weren’t fans of him personally. While I grew up in the Hulk Hogan era, there is no doubt that Cena has a place next to guys like Hulk for all he meant for WWE.

John Cena is awesome no matter what he did in the past, so god bless him and WWE better put over Oba Femi as he beats Cody Rhodes BEFORE the main event.
