This Week in Wrestling: Week 31 in 2025
The NWA on Roku

I had an opportunity to watch Billy Corgan’s National Wrestling Alliance’s debut on the Roku channel this past week. Admittedly, I have not seen an episode of the promotion since the pandemic hit back in 2020. Before that happened, I used to tune in to see the NWA Powerrr program on YouTube on a weekly basis. I really enjoyed the program, as it was different from anything that was airing at the time. I loved the old school look and feel to Powerrr with the classic “studio wrestling” and the talent roster was pretty solid.
After the pandemic shutdown, I had moved on from viewing the NWA, as I assume many other fans did. They seemingly had a TV deal with the CW network until an incident occurred with James Mitchell where he was filmed snorting cocaine. After that, the CW reportedly pulled their TV deal off the table. They were still allowed to stream on the CW app, but obviously losing the TV deal was a big deal. While not necessarily a bigger platform than the CW, Billy Corgan announced a streaming deal with the Roku channel.

I honestly paid no mind to it, until I got sick with the flu and decided to check the show out and give it another chance. The show was filmed at the old ECW arena in Philadelphia and was for the revived Crockett Cup. The old Crockett Cup tournament was a favorite of mine when I was younger. The NWA/Jim Crockett Promotions had so many great tag teams like the Road Warriors, the Midnight Express, the Fantastics, the Sheepherders, the Four Horsemen etc…entered into that tourney. This version of the Cup had teams like the Slimeballz , Blunt Force Trauma and The Lost…not exactly tag teams with household recognition, but I gave the show a go.

I was a bit entertained with the Roku show, but was disappointed with the program no longer using a studio set up. Some of the wrestlers and matches had a really bad indie feel to them. Despite that, I was entertained and would certainly give it another chance. Billy Corgan’s NWA has been through a lot since he took over the promotion. He recently aligned several independent promotions across the country to form a sorta territory system which I love to see. Corgan was able to get the most out of the talent he has on his roster. It is worth the effort to go check it out if you have Roku.

Loved NWA before the pandemic. Hated it after. I think the social distancing match did me in.
