‘The Korean Assassin’ Pak Song – Mat Villain

Dusty Rhodes is widely regarded as one of the greatest babyfaces in professional wrestling history. A key figure in shaping that legacy was Pak Song, whose partnership with manager Gary Hart made him a quintessential heel. Their villainous presence provided the ideal contrast for Rhodes, helping him rise to prominence and connect with fans as a beloved hero.

Song was born in Jinju, South Korea in 1943.  He was born with Marfan Syndrome, a multi-systemic genetic disorder that affects the connective tissue. People with the condition are often tall and thin, with long arms, legs, fingers, and toes. His appearance, as well as playing up the foreign heel persona, made him a great mat villain.

He started wrestling in Japan in 1966, eventually moving to the United States, settling in Texas.  He defeated Terry Funk for the prestigious Western States title.

Pak Song made his mark once he wrestled for Championship Wrestling from Florida.  He was highly successful, winning several titles such as the Florida title and several tag team belts.  Managed by Gary Hart, Song feuded with Funk, Jack Brisco, and Dusty Rhodes.  He was teaming with Rhodes against Mike and Eddie Graham when a miscommunication between the two caused Song to hit Rhodes.  Rhodes attacked Song and Hart and the beginning of one of the most successful careers was born.

Song continued his career in the Central States area and finally ended his career in Texas in 1980. Gary Hart tried to use Song as a wrestler in the Central States area, but he was too ill to work, so Hart used him as a bodyguard.  Hart tried to get Song to see a doctor, but his religion would not allow it.  When his visa expired, he returned home.  He died in 1982 from complications of diabetes.
