The ‘If Factor’ are a series of articles that takes a look at real scenarios in pro wrestling that at one point or another were suggested, planned, considered…but did not get the green light to continue. What would the landscape of professional wrestling look like if these ideas came to fruition?

The If: The Midnight Express Join the Four Horsemen in 1990

In 1990, Jim Cornette was a member of WCW’s booking committee. The top executive in the company was Jim Herd, who was not a big fan of the Midnight Express as a tag team. According to Cornette, Herd saw the team as low to mid card attractions and often treated them that way. Jim Herd wanted to split the team up with both Stan Lane and Bobby Eaton having singles careers with Jim Cornette permanently joining the broadcasting team. Feeling frustrated, Cornette turned to fellow member of the booking committee in Ric Flair.

Both men hated Jim Herd and came up with the idea to have the Midnight Express join the Four Horsemen. Cornette agreed to retire as a manager and join the broadcast booth on a permanent basis. The plan was for Cornette to “sell” the Midnight Express’ contracts to Nancy ‘Woman’ Sullivan and she would act as the manager of the new and improved Four Horsemen of Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and the Midnights. The booking committee along with Jim Herd agreed to the idea. Unfortunately, Herd decided to backtrack and nixed the plan before it was put into place. That ultimately led to the downfall of the tag team in WCW. What if The Midnight Express had joined the Four Horsemen in 1990? Would that version of the Horsemen succeed?
