A gimmick is something that is intended to hook the attention of fans to a wrestler. They may be outrageous or steeped more in reality, whatever the case may be…some have succeeded and many others have failed. The Gimmick Table takes a look at the origins of some of your favorite and not so favorite gimmicks of professional wrestlers.

Today we browse the gimmick of The Christmas Creature

In December of 1992, Glenn Jacobs was just starting to get his feet wet as a professional wrestler. He went down to Memphis, Tennessee and the USWA promotion to gain more experience. Jacobs had the size and look of what USWA owner Jerry ‘the King’ Lawler looked for in a wrestler.

During this time, Jerry’s son Kevin Lawler was learning the ropes (so to speak) of booking matches and creating characters. It was Kevin’s idea to create a character based on the Christmas holiday. His idea was an evil wrestler called ‘The Christmas Creature.’ Kevin knew his father loved wrestling gimmicks larger than life and also loved heels based on movie monsters. Just like his Dad, Kevin could also draw very well and designed what the Christmas Creature should look like. “A monster more scary than merry.”

Glenn Jacobs said that his mother was the one who actually made the Christmas Creature costume. It consisted of tinsel, candy cane striped sleeves and Christmas lights that actually lit up courtesy of a battery pack that was installed in the outfit. Jacobs said the Christmas Creature only lasted for about three matches before fading away as the holiday season came to a close…never to return.

*We will be off tomorrow for the holiday, but will return on the 26th. If you celebrate, Merry Christmas and/or Happy Hanukkah!. If not, have a great day nonetheless. See you back on Thursday!*
