A gimmick is something that is intended to hook the attention of fans to a wrestler. They may be outrageous or steeped more in reality, whatever the case may be…some have succeeded and many others have failed. The Gimmick Table takes a look at the origins of some of your favorite and not so favorite gimmicks of professional wrestlers.

Today we browse the gimmick of Black Blood

After burning bridges in the WWF and several other promotions with what he admits were attitude problems, Billy Jack Haynes was desperate to make his way back to a major wrestling promotion. Knowing that the WWF would not take him back…Haynes focused on trying to get signed to World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1991. The issue was, Haynes had issues with WCW’s booker Dusty Rhodes from their days wrestling in the Florida territory.

After several attempts to get a WCW contract and failing, Haynes thought of a gimmick that might help him get a look. He came up with the ‘Black Blood’ character, which was a masked executioner from “a little town in France.” The mask would conceal his real identity, in hopes that it would help Dusty not look bad to other wrestlers for giving him another chance. That isn’t the only idea that Haynes had to get signed by WCW.

According to Kevin Sullivan, Haynes dressed up in the Black Blood gimmick and went to WCW’s headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. Sullivan claimed that Haynes snuck in to the offices where Rhodes was located and slithered on the floor past other WCW executives and then popped up to scare Dusty and show him what the Black Blood character would look like. Sullivan said that Dusty was impressed with Haynes commitment to the gimmick and said that if he was willing to go to those lengths to show me the character…he was willing to give him a shot. The Black Blood gimmick did not last very long, as Haynes claimed he suffered a serious knee injury and was let go. Kevin Sullivan claimed that Haynes began no showing events and Dusty immediately fired him.
