RAVEN EFFECT: THE CAREER OF SCOTT LEVY

Scott Anthony Levy, better known to wrestling fans around the world as Raven, is one of the most intellectually distinctive and psychologically complex characters in the history of professional wrestling. Born on September 8, 1964, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Levy carved out a career that spanned decades across the globe in many different promotions.

Scott Levy grew up in New Jersey and developed an early fascination with professional wrestling. Unlike many of his peers, Levy approached wrestling with a strong interest in psychology, philosophy, and literature—elements that would later define his most famous character.

He trained under Larry Sharpe at the Monster Factory in New Jersey, one of wrestling’s most respected training grounds. Levy would then begin a long journey through regional territories such as Pacific Northwest Wrestling in Portland, Global Wrestling Federation in Dallas, and the United States Wrestling Association in Memphis.

Levy first gained national exposure in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as Scotty Flamingo. He would win the Light Heavyweight Championship by defeating Brian Pillman at Beach Blast 1992 and then feud with Johnny B. Badd. The feud with Badd would lead to a boxing match at Clash of the Champions XXI, with Scotty Flamingo getting the win by knockout after Vinnie Vegas weighted his boxing glove by soaking it in water. Levy would leave WCW after a disagreement with booker Bill Watts.

From there, Levy would sign with the World Wrestling Federation in 1993 where he adopted the preppy, obnoxious persona of Johnny Polo. As Johnny Polo, he served primarily as a manager, most notably managing The Quebecers to multiple reigns as World Tag Team Champions.

Levy’s career changed forever in 1995 when he arrived in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). There, he debuted the character that would define his legacy: Raven. Inspired by the poems of Edgar Allan Poe & Patrick Swayze’s manipulative zen master of crime in the movie ‘Point Break’, Raven surrounded himself with a group known as The Raven’s Nest, composed of misfits & outcasts. His main lackey and tag-team partner was Stevie Richards. Together they would win the ECW World Tag Team Championship on two occasions. His rivalry with Tommy Dreamer is widely regarded as one of the greatest long-term storylines in wrestling history. Raven became a 2-time ECW World Heavyweight Champion.

In 1997, Raven returned to WCW, bringing much of his ECW persona with him. While WCW softened the character for television, Raven still stood out as one of the promotion’s most unique figures. He would be seen sitting at ringside during WCW programming hyping up his debut. He was head of a stable called The Flock, a darker reimagining of the Raven’s Nest faction. He would only compete under “Raven’s Rules”, which were no-disqualification matches. Raven would have high-profile feuds and matches with the likes of Diamond Dallas Page, Chris Benoit, and Bill Goldberg. He won the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship & WCW World Tag Team Titles(w/Perry Saturn). While Raven never reached main-event superstardom in WCW, he was featured consistently and was on the cover of the mega-hit Nintendo 64 video game WCW/nWo Revenge before asking for his release from the company.

Raven returned to the WWF in 2000, fitting naturally into the company’s burgeoning Hardcore Division during the Attitude Era. He would win the WWF Hardcore Championship a record 26 times during this run. While entertaining, this run was often criticized for underutilizing Raven’s depth and intelligence, reducing him primarily to comedic violence rather than psychological storytelling.

Following his WWF departure, Raven continued wrestling across several promotions such as: NWA TNA, ROH, and MLW. He had a critically acclaimed & successful feud with CM Punk which culminated in a brutal dog-collar match while working for Ring of Honor. The rivalry helped elevate Punk, showcasing his potential and intensity. When he signed with TNA, he once again became a main-event superstar. He would win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship and be involved in main-event storylines during TNA’s formative years in feuds with Jeff Jarrett, Abyss, Vampiro, Monte Brown, and Rhino.

Raven’s impact on professional wrestling continues to this very day. He is a certified member of MENSA, the high-IQ society. He reportedly has an IQ of 143. Raven has a podcast on Spotify called “The Raven Effect” and has a brand new documentary that is now streaming called “Nevermore. The Raven Effect”. It gives an inside look into the mind of Levy and offers a detailed look at both his personal life and career.

Quote the Raven, Nevermore.
