Grappling with Tragedy is a series of articles that deal with unfortunate, tragic incidents that have occurred throughout the history of professional wrestling. It is unlike the ‘Wrestling with Sin’ series that deals more with the seedier side of wrestling like arrests, murders and suicides. Grappling looks more at particular tragic incidents that have in some instances altered pro wrestling in some way.
Sangre India

Jose Vicente Ramos Estrada started his professional career some time after graduating high school. He was trained by veteran luchadors Diablo Velasco and Antonio Cruz. Estrada took on the ring name of Sangre India which translated means ‘Indian Blood.’

He wrestled for approximately three years and was considered a rising star within Lucha Libre. As his career was just beginning to take off….Sagre India fell in love, got married and had a child. After just a few months after his child was born, Sangre India was booked in a tag team match at Arena Coliseo in Mexico City on Christmas night in 1979.

The match pitted El Vengador and César Atlas Curiel Vs. Leo López and Sangre India. During the course of the match, Sangre did a dive onto the outside of the ring and violently hit the back of his head on a chair. Sangre India laid unconcious as medical personnel rushed to tend to him. He was pronounced dead before he could be taken back to the locker room.

It was believed that Sangre India died almost instantaneously. He was just 23 years old at the time of his death.
