Dirty Dom: The King of the Mysterios

Last week, ‘Dirty’ Dominik Mysterio defeated El Hijo Del Vikingo for the AAA Mega championship. The Mega title is AAA’s top championship. It really got me thinking about where Dom was when he began his journey as a wrestler in WWE. The young man skipped over developmental and was basically thrust on the main roster teaming with his father Rey. I remember there was a lot of criticism from fans who thought this was a perfect example of wrestling nepotism. He was in many ways compared to other second generation wrestlers who were given undeserving pushes like David Flair and Erik Watts.

Much of that criticism was justified at the time, but as time would tell, Dominik became something far greater than projected. Dom came into the company during the pandemic and basically wrestled in empty arenas or in front of TV screens. He was bland, a generic white meat babyface and to top that…didn’t nearly have the athleticism of his famous father. Perhaps the time spent wrestling in front of nobody helped Dom mature and learn the basics, before the pandemic ended.

Whatever the case was, Rey credits Dom’s mother Angie as a catalyst for Dom to grow and bloom as a professional wrestler. She never saw her son as a babyface like Rey, but suggested that he was far better suited as a villain or heel as it were. Angie was 100% correct. When Dom turned heel on Edge and his father at Clash at the Castle event and joined Rhea Ripley and the Judgement Day faction….his stock immediately went on the rise.

Slowly but surely, Dominik Mysterio became more independent and not having to rely on his last name to get attention. Sure, many fans can say Dom is just stealing Eddie Guerrero’s old WWE gimmick. That is a fair argument to make, but even if that is the case, not just anybody can pull that off. Dom has certainly made his “Dirty” gimmick his own and fans who relentlessly booed him initially, are now starting to cheer him.

I really love the fact that WWE hasn’t flipped the switch and turned Dom into a babyface. They are keeping Dom true to what he has excelled at…a heel. If Vince McMahon was still in power, I think Dom would have already been a babyface again to try and capitalize on his growing popularity. In any case, while Dominik Mysterio may not have the career of his dad Rey, he is carving out something on his own and should be commended.
