A gimmick is something that is intended to hook the attention of fans to a wrestler. They may be outrageous or steeped more in reality, whatever the case may be…some have succeeded and many others have failed. The Gimmick Table takes a look at the origins of some of your favorite and not so favorite gimmicks of professional wrestlers.

Today we browse the gimmick of Laser-Tron

While wrestling for Jim Crockett Jr. in the Mid Atlantic area, second generation veteran Hector Guerrero had an idea that he felt would be a hit for the promotion. Guerrero felt that one thing that JCP was lacking, was a wrestler marketed towards the kids. Hector approached the booker Dusty Rhodes in 1987 with an idea for a gimmick. According to Guerrero, Dusty was more than willing to hear his idea.

Hector saw the popularity of the the Transformers during this time and wanted to create a character from outer space. Guerrero also saw the game laser tag was becoming a very popular game for the kids and wanted to combine the two. Hector came up with the gimmick of Laser-Tron. He borrowed from the Transformer character name of Megatron and combined it with laser for the game and came up with Laser-Tron. Hector said he told his father Gory about his idea and his father had his mask made for him down in Mexico.

Guerrero said that Crockett loved the gimmick and had Laser-Tron win the NWA Junior heavyweight title. He also teamed often with popular star ‘The Boogie Woogie Man’ Jimmy Valiant. While Laser-Tron was gaining popularity, Hector wasn’t making enough money in the territory and decided to quit. He handed Crockett the Junior Heavyweight belt which he never lost and walked away retiring the Laser-Tron gimmick. Hector said that Crockett wanted to continue the gimmick with another wrestler under the mask, but Hector owned and still owns the rights to the gimmick. Not long after, Hector joined the WWF and portrayed another sorta masked character called ‘The Gobbledy Gooker.’
