This is the 326th installment of the ‘Wrestling with Sin‘ series. A group of stories that delves into the darker, underbelly of pro wrestling. Many of the stories involve such subjects as sex, drugs, greed and in some cases even murder! As with every single story in the Sin series, I do not condone or condemn the alleged participants. We simply retell their stories by researching interviews, newspapers, magazines and various other sources of media.
Rat Wrecker
In 2007, while WWE was on a tour of the United Kingdom, a bunch of the wrestlers were at a hotel bar drinking. One of the wrestlers…JTG…decided he had a bit too much to drink and returned to his room. After passing out on his bed, he received a call from John Cena. According to JTG, Cena said that there was a woman downstairs in the lobby looking for him. Cena decided to give the woman JTG’s room number and sent her up…despite JTG telling Cena he wasn’t interested.
A couple of minutes later, there was a knock on his door from the woman in question and a drunk JTG answered it. JTG claims the woman was extremely aggressive towards him and says she took advantage of him being intoxicated. He went as far as to accuse the woman of raping him and then leaving. Not long after, JTG received another call, this time from one of his close wrestler friends who he didn’t name. The wrestler friend asked if JTG slept with the woman that came to his room.
JTG admitted he did, but said he was taken advantage of. As it turned out, the woman was a “personal rat” or groupie to the unnamed wrestler. The next few weeks turned ugly for JTG, as rumors were going around that JTG was sleeping with other wrestlers girlfriends. Tensions between JTG and his former friend got so bad, JTG was summoned to ‘Wrestlers Court.’ That afternoon, before Monday Night Raw, JTG was set to be tried by his peers with the Undertaker as judge.
Right before the wrestlers court was to begin, word came back to all the wrestlers in the court that Chris Benoit and his wife Nancy and son Daniel were all found dead. The trial never occurred and JTG and his friend turned enemy ended up making up.
Take Me ‘homa
While wrestling for the Mid South promotion, Barry Darsow faced off against ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan in a Coal Miner’s Glove match in a town in Oklahoma. At the conclusion of the match, Nikolai Volkoff ran in and interfered on behalf of Darsow. As Volkoff and Darsow were attacking a bloodied Duggan, a uniformed police officer at ringside inexplicably slid a steel chair into the ring. The heels grabbed the chair and used it on Duggan.
This led the fans in attendance to go wild with anger and some legitimately attacked the cop. Realizing this wasn’t a part of the match, Volkoff and Darsow tried to escape to the back. The problem was, the fans decided to block the exit with some fans jumping into the ring to attack the heels. This led promoter Bill Watts to empty out the locker room with both heels and faces to storm the ring and protect the wrestlers inside.
Both the faces and heels began throwing kicks and punches on the fans in and out of the ring and had to fight their way back to the locker room. Luckily, they were successful, but Darsow cited that incident as the scariest moment of his career.
The Soma of 1997
The late Sherri Martel had battled alcohol and drug addiction for the majority of her time in WCW. In July of 1997, Sherri admitted that she got bored backstage at a Nitro taping. To cure her boredom, Sherri said she popped four somas and started stumbling around backstage all woozy. She became so disoriented, she forgot she had already taken the muscle relaxers and took four more pills.
Word got back to Eric Bischoff that Sherri was acting erratically and she was summoned to his office. Once she sat down to be questioned by Bischoff, Sherri fell off the chair onto the floor and was unconscious. Sherri said that Bischoff fired her right after that incident.
Made of Iron
Former WWF world champion Iron Sheik was wrestling on the independent circuit in the early 1990’s. One night after a show, Sheik was having dinner with a group of wrestlers and was complaining that he wasn’t getting enough sleep at night. A fellow wrestler handed him two huge pills and said that they would help him sleep. After chasing both pills down with some beer, a few minutes later…the wrestlers at his table noticed the Iron Sheik drooling heavily from his mouth and in a trance.
Instead of taking him to a hospital, the wrestlers carried Sheik back to his hotel room. They wound up staying up all night making sure that the Sheik was still breathing and not die in his sleep. The Iron Sheik ended up sleeping for over 17 hours. When he finally woke up, one of the first things he did was reach in his bag and started freebasing cocaine as if nothing happened to him.
