Grappling with Tragedy is a series of articles that deal with unfortunate, tragic incidents that have occurred throughout the history of professional wrestling. It is unlike the ‘Wrestling with Sin’ series that deals more with the seedier side of wrestling like arrests, murders and suicides. Grappling looks more at particular tragic incidents that have in some instances altered pro wrestling in some way.
Shad Gaspard
Shad Gaspard was much more than a professional wrestler. He was a devoted husband and father, an actor, an author, and ultimately a real-life hero whose final act demonstrated extraordinary courage.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, his father was a former enforcer for street gangs and later a personal security guard in the early 1970’s working for gangster Frank Lucas. At age 16, Gaspard began prize fighting for promoter and former WCW wrestler, Hardbody Harrison, himself a former FX Tough Man Champion, in bar fighting tournaments. From there, Shad worked as a bodyguard for celebrities, including P. Diddy and Mike Tyson.
Standing 6-foot-7 and possessing an impressive physique, he seemed destined for sports and entertainment. In 2002, Gaspard decided to try his hand at professional wrestling. After qualifying for the finals of Tough Enough 2, he was disqualified from the show for failing a physical. He kept at it and was then recruited by Tom Prichard and signed a developmental contract with WWE and sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling. Gaspard would feud with CM Punk and become an OVW Tag Team Champion on two occasions with partner JTG. In 2006, they debuted on Raw as Cryme Tyme. Inspired by urban culture and presented with a comedic edge, Cryme Tyme quickly became fan favorites. The duo entertained audiences with memorable backstage skits while also proving themselves as a competitive tag team. They feuded with teams including Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch, The Hart Dynasty, and John Morrison & The Miz, and were regular fixtures on both Raw and SmackDown throughout the late 2000s.
Although Cryme Tyme never captured the WWE Tag Team Championship, they remained one of the company’s most recognizable and beloved teams of their era. They were both released in 2007 but were re-hired in 2008 and formed a faction with John Cena. Gaspard was released by WWE again in 2010, but he and JTG reunited on the independent wrestling scene, where they continued entertaining fans around the world.
Outside of wrestling, Gaspard expanded into acting, appearing in television shows and films including Think Like a Man Too, Get Hard, The Game, From Dusk Til Dawn: The Series, and Birds of Prey. He also co-authored the graphic novel Assassin & Son, showcasing his creativity beyond the ring. Shad also did motion capture work as the lead character Kratos for the video game God of War and for Bane in the game Batman: The Enemy Within.
Shad was equally respected for his character away from wrestling. In 2016, he helped stop an armed robbery at a Florida gas station, disarming and detaining the suspect until authorities arrived.
On May 17, 2020, Gaspard was swimming with his 10-year-old son at Venice Beach in California when they were caught in a powerful rip current. As lifeguards reached them, Gaspard instructed them to save his son first. His son was rescued safely, but Gaspard was swept away by the waves. His body was recovered three days later.
His selfless sacrifice touched people around the world, and in 2022, WWE posthumously honored him with the Warrior Award during the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony. The award recognized not only his contributions to wrestling but also his extraordinary bravery and the example he set as a father and a human being.
Shad Gaspard’s legacy extends far beyond championships and accolades. He is remembered as a charismatic performer, a loyal friend, a loving family man, and a genuine hero whose final act of courage ensured his son’s survival. His story remains one of the most inspiring in professional wrestling history, proving that true greatness is measured not only by what happens inside the ring, but by the lives touched outside of it.
