This Week in Wrestling: Week 27 of 2026

It was reported this week that after nearly 20 years with the company Stephen Farrelly aka Sheamus is leaving WWE. Much like the New Day beforehand, Farrelly apparently refused to take a pay cut instead opting to walk away after nearly two decades. This definitely caused a lot of chatter among fans with many speculating that he’ll end up in AEW. Others were upset that Sheamus who appeared to be a “WWE Lifer” was so easily let go after all those years of service.

I have to admit, early on in Sheamus’ WWE career, I was not really a big fan. It took a number of years for me to appreciate what a solid hand he was inside the ring. He worked a very hard hitting, stiff style that really blossomed when he worked with guys like Gunther and Drew McIntyre. All those years working that style cost him several injuries to his neck, back and shoulders. The last couple of years he has been more on the sidelines than in a WWE ring.

While still in tremendous shape, Farrelly is 48 years old and possibly at the tail end of his career. Still, I can see why some fans criticized WWE for letting him go. The feeling was/is that WWE and TKO have become way too corporate and no longer appreciate loyal employees. Sheamus practically won every major title and accomplishment there was to win in the company aside from the Intercontinental championship. Seeing him leave is in many ways unfortunate.

While I get the who corporate aspect of this situation, I still feel that loyalty is nice to have as well. A place that truly appreciates all of the hard work you put in and that you are not just a body that can be easily replaced. That is the way of the corporate world though and Sheamus just wasn’t making WWE money. I am absolutely positive he will land on his feet just fine. Whether that is with AEW, TNA, New Japan or back in Europe…Farrelly has built his name and reputation and can still earn big money, I think. This isn’t the end for Stephen Farrelly, but a brand new beginning.

Will never understand why wrestling fans get so upset over this stuff. Pay cuts and releases happen every off season in the NFL. Players are cut or restructure their contracts to stay with a team that is under a salary cap. In this case the guy is 48 and clearly well past his prime.
